Nice post! Bonnie Nardi, Celia Pearce, T.L. Taylor, and I are working on our Handbook of Ethnographic Methods for Virtual Worlds as fast as we can; it probably won't be out until next year, but this kind of discussion exactly the kind of thing to which we hope the book will contribute!

I'm reminded that it's frequently the small things that jump out as meaningful years later. I often capture things that seem linked somehow, though I frequently don't know how. I cast a super wide net, then focus, synthesize and disseminate. That's how I'd describe the method simply.
